What are β€˜Life Winks’?

You're going about your day. Nothing special is happening. And then... something stops you in your tracks.

Maybe a song comes on the radio at exactly the moment you needed to hear those particular words. Maybe you're thinking about someone you haven't spoken to in years, and your phone buzzes with a message from them. Maybe you look up and notice a hawk perched on a fence post, staring straight at you, and something in your chest just knows it means something.

That's a Life Wink.

Let Me Explain

I've talked a lot about what I call Ordinary Magick - the everyday enchantment that's available to all of us if we're paying attention. Life Winks fall into that same territory, but they have a slightly different flavor.

A Life Wink is a synchronicity - or something like one - that carries personal meaning for you. It stops you mid-sentence, mid-thought, mid-breath. It makes you wonder. It makes you feel, even just for a moment, like something bigger than your ordinary life is communicating with you directly.

Some people call them God's Road Signs. Some call them signs from the Universe. Some call them coincidences (though I'd gently push back on that one).

I call them Life Winks - because that's exactly what they feel like. A little nudge. A knowing look. A wink from Life (with a capital L) that says: I see you. I'm here. Pay attention.

Why "Wink"?

Because it's not a thunderclap. It's not a burning bush or a chorus of angels (though if you've had one of those, I would absolutely love to hear about it).

Most of the time, it's subtle. Easy to dismiss. Easy to chalk up to coincidence if you're not in the habit of noticing.

A wink is small. It requires you to be looking in order to catch it. And when you do catch it - when your eyes meet and you realize it was meant for you - there's this little flutter of recognition that something real just passed between you and Life.

That flutter? That's what we're after.

This Isn't Wishful Thinking

I want to be clear about something, because I know how this can sound to a certain kind of mind (my own included, sometimes).

Life Winks aren't about forcing meaning onto random events or seeing what you want to see. They're not about magical thinking that bypasses reality.

They're about noticing. About being genuinely open to the possibility that Life is in constant communication with you, and that you have a choice about whether or not to participate in that conversation.

This is part of what I think of as learning to read your own soul breadcrumbs - the trail your authentic self has been leaving you all along. Life Winks are some of the most potent breadcrumbs there are. They have a particular energy to them, like a tincture dropped directly onto the tongue rather than something diluted and dissolved into a glass of water.

When I've been in the habit of noticing - really noticing - my life has felt more alive. More purposeful. Even in hard seasons. Especially in hard seasons.

How to Recognize One

There's no formula. That's the honest answer.

But here's what I've noticed: Life Winks tend to carry a particular quality with them. Something that makes you pause. A little shiver of recognition. A quiet but unmistakable sense of oh.

They often show up when you're standing at a threshold - when you're trying to make a decision, navigating something hard, or wondering if you're on the right path. As if Life knows exactly when to lean over and whisper.

They rarely shout. They wink.

What to Do When You Catch One

First: slow down. Even for thirty seconds.

Let yourself feel the full weight of the moment before you explain it away or move on to the next thing on your list.

Then: write it down if you can. I've found that the act of recording a Life Wink somewhere - even a voice memo to yourself in the car - honors it. And that act of honoring tends to invite more of them.

You don't have to know what it means in that moment. You just have to be willing to receive it.

The Invitation

If you're here, reading this, I have a feeling you already know what I'm talking about. You've caught a wink or two in your life. Maybe you didn't have a name for it before. Maybe you filed it away under "weird coincidence" and moved on.

What if you didn't, next time?

What if you let yourself wonder for just a moment - what if Life is actually paying attention to me?

Because here's what I believe with my whole self: It is. It absolutely is.

And the more you pay attention back, the more the medicine in those moments gets to reach you.

Have you experienced a Life Wink? I'd genuinely love to hear about it.
